The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER) is looking for a

Research Fellow (m/f/d)

in the field of bioenergy, resources and energy conversion technologies who will be part of the research group "Local Multi-Energy Systems."

The position is based in Karlsruhe with a duration of initially 2 years starting as soon as possible. The salary is based on qualifications and experience according to TV-L (100%).

The European Institute for Energy Research was founded by EDF and the KIT in 2002 aiming at enhancing collaboration through projects applied to industrial issues and utilities’ needs. With its applied research orientation EIFER has been bridging the gap between science and industry for more than 20 years. In the context of the European energy transition, EIFER provides research-based innovative energy solutions for a sustainable future.

You will be part of the "Local Multi-Energy Systems" research group with around 25 researchers, where bioenergy is an important part of our activity:

  • Strategic and economic analysis of the development of biofuels and their role in the decarbonization of the economy. Analysis of pathways, actor’s strategies, impact of regulations.
  • Technical and economic analysis of technologies, characterisation of resources, fuel treatment, conversion technologies, treatment and valorisation of wastes. 
  • Technical R&D studies applied to bioenergy projects at different stages: conceptual, feasibility, design, operation.

What You Can Expect

  • Conducting strategic and prospective analyses of trajectories, pathways, and roadmaps for various bioenergy markets and stakeholders.
  • Assessing bioenergy resources qualitatively and quantitatively for different valorisation routes (forestry, agriculture, wastes).
  • Analyzing current and upcoming regulations.
  • Evaluating biomass conversion technologies technically and economically (biological, thermal, and thermochemical).
  • Communicating with EIFER’s clients to understand their needs, define work plans, and report progress and results (strategic, engineering, business development, and operational entities).
  • Additionally, you will contribute to the development of EIFER’s research agenda and enhance its scientific recognition in the field by:
    • Responding to public funded project calls 
    • Maintaining and expanding EIFER’s industrial and academic partnerships through proactive engagement and networking.
    • Publishing results in scientific journals and conferences.

What We Expect

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, process engineering, environmental engineering or general engineering
  • Knowledge of/and experience in biomass/energy is a plus 
  • Rigorous with quality/cost/deadlines
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work fluently (written and spoken) in English and French, German is an asset
  • Ability to communicate and work in a multicultural team/environment, enthusiasm, reliability and independent working style
